As summer begins and the days grow longer and warmer, it’s the perfect time to enjoy sunshine, fresh air, and family. But for seniors—especially those receiving home care—summer also brings unique challenges that require a little extra attention and planning.
In this month’s blog, we’re sharing important tips to help families and caregivers ensure older adults stay safe, comfortable, and engaged all season long.
1. Beat the Heat with Smart Hydration
Older adults are more vulnerable to dehydration, especially in high temperatures. Encourage regular water intake—even if they say they’re not thirsty—and offer hydrating snacks like watermelon, cucumbers, or popsicles.
Caregiver Tip: Keep a water bottle nearby and set reminders to drink every hour.
2. Sun Protection is a Must
Whether it’s a walk in the garden or sitting by a sunny window, protect your loved one’s skin with broad-spectrum sunscreen, light long-sleeved clothing, and wide-brimmed hats.
Did You Know? Seniors have thinner skin, making them more susceptible to sunburn and skin damage.
3. Stay Cool Indoors
Make sure fans, air conditioning, or cooling towels are readily available. If your loved one doesn’t have AC, plan visits to community centers or indoor malls during peak heat hours (typically 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.).
4. Keep Routines Joyful & Active
Longer days mean more chances for engagement and meaningful activity. From simple indoor games to outdoor strolls in the early morning or evening, staying active helps both mental and physical well-being.
Engagement Idea: Create a summer scrapbook together with photos, memories, and favorite summer recipes.
5. Celebrate Caregivers
June is also a time to appreciate those who provide compassionate care every day. Our caregivers go above and beyond to ensure comfort, safety, and dignity—and we’re proud to support them.
To Our Caregivers: Your dedication changes lives. You are the heart of homecare, and we thank you.
