Summer in Georgia Is No Joke—Let’s Keep Our Loved Ones Safe
Here in Georgia, we know our summers come with blazing sun, high humidity, and soaring temperatures. For many of us, it’s just part of life—but for seniors and those with medical conditions, that kind of heat can be dangerous if we’re not careful.
At Blossom Home Care, we want to make sure all our clients, families, and caregivers are protected during the hottest months of the year. That’s why we’re sharing simple, helpful tips you can use to stay safe and cool this July and beyond.
Why Seniors Are More Vulnerable in the Heat
As we age, our bodies respond differently to temperature changes. Seniors often:
- Sweat less, making it harder to cool down
- May not feel thirsty even when they’re dehydrated
- Take medications that affect how their body handles heat
That’s why it’s so important to plan ahead and check in regularly.
Easy Ways to Stay Safe This Summer
Whether you’re caring for a loved one or receiving care yourself, these safety tips can help prevent heat-related illnesses:
1. Hydrate Often
- Drink water throughout the day—even if you’re not thirsty
- Avoid sodas, alcohol, or too much caffeine
2. Stay Inside During Peak Heat
- Limit outdoor activity between 11 AM and 4 PM
- Use fans or air conditioning if possible
3. Dress for the Weather
- Wear light-colored, breathable clothing
- Use a wide-brimmed hat or umbrella when outside
4. Protect the Skin
- Apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen before going out
- Don’t forget sunglasses to protect the eyes!
5. Watch for Signs of Heat Exhaustion
Know the warning signs:
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Headache
- Nausea
- Cold, clammy skin
If you notice any of these, cool down immediately and seek help.
